Tsukiji station

Tsukiji Station opened in 1963 on the Hibiya line, in the heart of a district that was then inseparable from its great wholesale market. For more than half a century, it served as the gateway for restaurateurs, professionals, and visitors who came to explore the market's aisles. The wholesale trade was transferred to Toyosu in 2018, but the Tsukiji outer market, its food shops, and the Tsukiji Hongwan-ji temple remain very active. The station therefore retains an important role serving tourists and locals alike. Its recent history shows how a piece of infrastructure keeps its identity even when the urban facility that made it famous moves away.

When the wholesale market moved to Toyosu in 2018, the station of course did not change its name. The outer market stayed put, which still sustains the association between Tsukiji and gastronomy today.
