新橋駅

Shimbashi holds a special place in the history of Japanese railways. The country's first railway line, in 1872, connected a terminal near Shimbashi to Yokohama; that historic site now lies on the Shiodome side. The present station opened in 1909 under the name Karasumori, then took the name Shimbashi in 1914. It was gradually joined by the Ginza line, the Asakusa line, and the automated Yurikamome. Located between Ginza, the offices of Shiodome, and the administrative district, it has become an emblematic station for office workers and a major transfer point in the southern part of central Tokyo.

On the west plaza, a C11 steam locomotive is displayed in front of the station and gives its name to "SL Square." Its whistle sounds at certain hours, amid a district now surrounded by offices.
