The first station in the area opened in 1938 on the Ginza line under a different name. It became Omote-sando in 1978, when the Chiyoda and Hanzomon lines turned the site into a full interchange. Set beneath the crossing of Omotesando and Aoyama-dori, the station serves one of the best-known architectural and shopping promenades in Tokyo. Its accesses lead toward the boutiques, galleries, and residential streets of Aoyama. The arrangement of the Ginza and Hanzomon platforms eases transfers in the same direction, while the Chiyoda line occupies a separate level. The station thus combines transfer efficiency with a strong urban identity.

The Ginza and Hanzomon lines share two island platforms organized by direction. A traveler can therefore change lines in a few steps, without stairs, while continuing toward the same side of the city.
