上野駅

Ueno opened in 1883 as the terminus for trains heading toward northern Japan. That vocation left a lasting mark on its identity: for decades, travelers and workers coming from the Tōhoku region made their first entry into the capital here. The current building, rebuilt after the Great Kantō earthquake, dates from 1932. The arrival of the Shinkansen in 1985 and its later extension to Tokyo Station reduced its role as a terminus, without erasing the symbolic weight of the place. The station remains closely tied to Ueno Park, its museums, the university of the arts, and the Ameyoko market, forming a threshold between culture, working-class commerce, and long-distance journeys.

The song "Aah Ueno Station," which became a symbol of the young workers who came up to Tokyo after the war, has its own monument inside the station. It recalls Ueno's role as the point of arrival from the north of the country.
