六本木駅

Roppongi Station links two very different generations of the Tokyo subway. The Hibiya line opened here in 1964, just as the district was transforming with the internationalization of the capital. The Ōedo line arrived in 2000 in a far deeper tunnel, dictated by the density of the infrastructure already in place. Today the station serves Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Midtown, museums, and a major nightlife district. The vertical transfers, sometimes long, make visible how Tokyo adds new layers of transport beneath an already built city. Roppongi thus functions as much as a cultural and economic destination as a laboratory for the constraints of the modern subway.

The Ōedo line platforms at Roppongi are among the deepest in the Japanese subway, more than forty meters below the surface. The long escalators are fully part of the station experience.
